My throat hurts!

Tonsillitis can be divided into the following main categories:

bullet

Acute tonsillitis

This involves repeated attacks causing pain and associated with temperatures and needing antibiotics to recover.

bullet

Chronic tonsillitis

This is a long standing of the tonsils in their deeper aspect. It is associated with spitting out white smelly material and tends to make people feel run down and tired.

bullet

Quinsy

This is an infection near the tonsil, associated with significant pain and tightness of the jaw. Drainage of an abscess is usually necessary, often whilst still awake!
