How it is done?
Tonsillectomy may involve any combination of the
following:
-
Removal with surgical instruments and sutures to stop
bleeding
-
Diathermy, which is also known as electrocautery.
-
Coblation, which is a new technology
-
Laser, which is not as popular these days
Adenoidectomy
As the adenoids
are located at the back of the nose, it is not possible to see them directly
by looking through the mouth. Removing the adenoids is a bit like asking a
mechanic to check under the bonnet of your car whilst standing on the roof.
There are 2 main ways of performing an adenoidectomy- blindly or with
visualisation with either a mirror or a telescope. It is becoming
increasingly recognised that the adenoids may grow back and it has been
suggested that part of the reason for this is the technique used in their
removal.
Whilst there are many ways of performing the procedure, the most important
thing is using an experienced surgeon who is proficient with a particular
method and has safe outcomes. This is the one operation where paying for
experience is really worth it.
